The ‘Danube Delta’ National Institute for Research and Development has as main purpose  the basic and applied research on ecology and environmental protection for the management substantiation in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (DDBR) and in other wetlands of national and international importance for the biodiversity conservation and sustainable development (art. no. 2 from the HG no. 409/1999).

     The relevance of the institute’s activity regarding the  matters  of  environmental  development  at  local / regional / national and international levels is supported by the special statute of this area and the programmes and conventions Romania has adhered to:

►  The International Programme MAB-UNESCO which includes the Danube Delta into the
            international network of Biosphere Reserves - 1993
►  The RAMSAR Convention on wetlands of international importance especially as a waterfowl 
            habitat, by including the Danube Delta on the list  of such wetlands - 1991
►  The UNESCO Convention on the protection of the Natural and Cultural World Patrimony
            - 1990
►  Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and
           Flora - 1994
►  Bern Convention on the Conservation of the European Wildlife and Natural Habitats – 1993  


      Due to its expertise and contribution to the local, regional and national research and development programmes, DDNI has been nomitated as:

► National Reference Centre for Land Cover and Fisheries

► Main Scientific Advisor of the Ministry of Environment and Water Management for the
         implementation of the NATURA 2000 Network in Romania

► Technological Information Centre for the Danube Delta of the Ministry of Education and 
        Research
